Celebrate Freedom to Read

This week, September 23 -29, 2018, we are celebrating Banned Books Week! Many readers would be surprised to find out how many books that they have read that are actually on the banned books list.  Books are challenged, questioned, or even banned frequently, usually by concerned parents but it could be by anyone or group. Many of reasons for these challenges are due to explicit sexual content or offensive language.  Some have been accused of promoting homosexuality. Banned Books Week is a time libraries and bookstores to remind us to celebrate our freedom to read without censorship.

If you are interested in learning more about banned books, here are a few websites you may want to visit:
www.ala.org/advocacy/bbooks/banned

Come check out the display and a book at the BSC Library, and celebrate your freedom to read with us!

Celebrate U.S. Constitution Day

The U.S. Constitution was ratified on September 17, 1787. Every year around Constitution Day educational institutions across the United States teach students about the important history of the U.S. Constitution. This year the Birmingham-Southern College Library encourages you to learn a little more about the document that makes our government so preferable to the alternatives that are out there. The Library has created a research guide highlighting interesting information about the Constitution. Please take a look at our display in the Library, and also our Research Guide for Constitution Day.

Library needs student suggestions for SGA movie collection!

Have you ever gone to check out a movie from the library, only to find that after thoroughly searching, it's nowhere to be found? Well now is the time to change that! The library is gearing up to order some new movies for the SGA recreational video collection, and we need student input.  Whether it's an older movie that we have on VHS but not DVD, or a new movie that's just been released on DVD, or maybe even a movie that we don't have in either format, please drop by the Circulation Desk to put your suggestions in the box!

A big THANK YOU to SGA for providing the funds for us to be able to purchase these movies!
