Welcome, New Students!

... and welcome back, returning students!

The Library and ARC held our new student orientation sessions in the library this morning. Kim Thomas and Julia Matson spoke with students about the Academic Resource Center and its services; Geri Worley provided an overview of some of the information technology available to students on campus; Pam Sawallis and Steve Laughlin discussed library databases and other services; and Stacey Thornberry energetically led students on tours of the building and its collections. We were generally pleased with the turnout - and we thank the peer advisors and SOS for their help with this part of orientation! If you missed the library orientation, or found your interest piqued by one of the sessions, please note that the first 3 Common Hours of the semester have been set aside by the Provost to follow up on some of the information we quickly breezed through today:

Biological Abstracts now available

Welcome back to the spring term. We have some exciting new information sources available now. The first is Biological Abstracts, which is a very important resource for biology and related fields. We had previously subscribed to a subset of Biological Abstracts (called Basic Biosis), but when that product was discontinued, and the database from 1997 forward. Biological Abstracts works well with our Articles@BSC linking service to our e-journals.

Recption in honor of Dr. H.O.R. van Tuyll van Serooskerken

You are invited to a reception To acknowledge the gift of Dr. H.O.R. van Tuyll van Serooskerken Of his personal library Given in honor of his daughter Dr. Renee Norrell November 7, 2007 4:00 – 5:00 p. m. Wood Room Charles Andrew Rush Learning Center/ N.E. Miles Library “He is a tremendous scholar,” said Dr. Renee Norrell about her father, Professor van Tuyll van Serooskerken. She might have been more specific—for he is at least a philosopher, theologian, and musician—but that would be too limiting. “Tremendous scholar” will have to do. Professor van Tuyll van Serooskerken earned his doctorate in Philosophy with a dissertation on Emmanuel Kant. During his early days in Holland he served as organist in Utrecht’s French Protestant Church. After the war he immigrated with his family to Canada, where he served as a Dutch Reformed Church minister before teaching Religion and Philosophy at Acadia University, Nova Scotia. He then came to Alabama, where he taught at the University of Montevallo. He is the author of two books: the first on Kant, De strijd om het ding an sich in eenige na-Kantische beschouwingen (Breukelen, 1947); the second is on J. S. Bach, Probleme des Bachporträts (Bilthoven, Creyghton, 1956). Now retired, Professor van Tuyll van Serooskerken continues an active intellectual life, indulging his passion for classical organ music and organs and holding weekly conversations about Philosophy with his former students.
